THE INDIE
The word ‘independent’ is very much synonymous with artistic communities the world over. What does this adjective really mean used in this context? Very often it means freedom from the confines brought about by structured, established systems; by and large, it also often implies something that is created devoid of a large financial backing. In Malaysia, this is ever prevalent with limited government and corporate spending on the arts. Of late, the economy is on everyone’s mind and they worry about having enough money. On the other hand, the artist sits struggling to just merely create. The latter, very often, works in service of his art – ‘independently’ financing it from wages of a part time job, an artistic grant that he was blessed enough to receive or a piece of art he was fortunate enough to monetise. This is the independent artist, henceforth regarded as ‘the indie’.

In support of this cause and inspired by this year’s World Environment Day on 5th of June, Aesthetics is partnering with MNS in a cooperative effort to raise awareness, not just locally but on a global platform. In light of their ongoing Save the Belum-Temenggor campaign, we at Aesthetics will be inaugurating our environmental contribution by spreading the word and setting an example; with a significant reduction in paper usage, size and number of pages utilized from the month of June onwards, in the spirit of saving our trees and rainforests.

The humble honeybee. Not hugely significant in the general cycle of things one would have thought, more hindrance than help, especially when you’re on the receiving end of a particularly vicious sting. So you’d think that when there’s news that more and more of them are dying everyday, it would be good news, right? After all, they’re pests, and painful ones at that.
